  • If you need unemployment benefits advice, then the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development can be contacted from Sunday to Friday from 8:00am to midnight. If you do not have internet access you can use the computers at your local Tennessee Career Center. You may file a lack of work claim on line but not federal claims. You can file a claim by phone from the Career Center too by requesting assistance from the front desk representative.

    It is preferable to call Wednesday through Friday and you should not use a cellular phone. The phone number is : (615)253-0800 or (877) 813 0950. You may register at the Career Center for job search assistance.

    If you use internet or phone you should be prepared with your social security number and drivers license number. You will be required to give your address and telephone number as well as the details of your separating employer-that is name, address and phone number as well as fax number if possible. Please be ready to give the date you finished working , reasons for separation and details of the last 18 months of employment.

    Unemployment insurance benefit is designed to help those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own while they look for employment of wait for their previous employer to recall them. The Tennessee Employment Security Law receives this insurance from employers. If this is the case with you under some circumstances you may be eligible for benefits even though you have some part time work, as long as you earn less than the weekly benefit amount. If you are eligible you may claim, if you are physically able to work and available to accept suitable work. There is one week of waiting in which no payment will be made but thereafter you will receive the benefit accorded to you each week. You will be required to report any earnings during these benefit weeks. Anyone who makes false statements or withholds information may be disqualified for up to a year for any benefits.

    You and your employer can be prosecuted for knowingly making false statements. If you are overpaid you are required to repay the amount.

    There is a also Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) designed to help those of 55 years or more with poor employment prospects. The program provides useful community services while at the same time preparing people by training and job placement in unsubsidized jobs.
