  • The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development has partnered with the U.S Department of Agriculture to provide Tennessee unemployed workers with the Food Stamp Program. This program is designed to help Tennessee unemployed workers without dependents receive the training they need to find a job, keep it, survive and prosper as productive members of society.

    The program assesses every individual on its own merits and designs a plan based on his or her personal circumstances, strengths and weaknesses to reach both short and long-term self-sufficiency and independence goals. The program provides eligible participants with eight main opportunities or activities that are expected to create a bridge for the participant to move from being a dependent to reaching his or her full potential.

    1) The Food Stamps Employment and Training program helps unemployed workers to find a new job through a supervised employment search designed to provide the fastest possible results.

    2) Enrollment in a job success clinic program, which provides students with training classes to improve their chances of finding employment and progressing in it once they are employed.

    3) Basic survival skills. This does not refer to starting a fire or selecting mushrooms, but survival skills for the work and education environment.

    4) Access to adult education. The Food Stamps Education program allows members to further their education through a GED certificate.

    5) Work training. This program allows unemployed workers to improve their work skills by learning them on the job. Although the students do not receive payment, it helps them experience that will help them to experience a positive life structure, hone their marketable employment skills and network with companies in an industry where they could find work.

    6) Secondary Education is open for participants in the program who have expressed their interest in an occupational goal that entails a two or four year certificate or degree.

    7) Literacy. This part of the program helps eligible workers to improve their reading and writing skills up to grade 5 literacy levels.

    icon cool TN Unemployment Programs: Food Stamps Employment and Training Vocational training is also available for workers interested in learning a trade through a local training organization. Workers are encouraged to apply for industries with a high demand where they will have a better chance of finding work.

    As you can see this program deals with the underlying factors that determine the work search success of an unemployed worker. As mentioned above, this program is focused on able-bodied adults without dependents, but up to 20 percent of the program’s funds can be used for unemployed workers with dependents.
