The State of Tennessee has six main federal unemployment programs available to Tennessee workers. Two of these programs, the EUC, or Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, and EB, the Extended Benefits program, we have spoken about extensively. However, the other four: UCFE, UCX, TRA and DUA are not as well known. This article will provide a brief look at the Unemployment Compensation for Former Federal Employees program and the Trade Readjustment Allowances program and explain how you can benefit from these schemes.
UCFE, Unemployment Compensation for Former Federal Employees
As its name indicates, this program is designed to help unemployed workers who previously were employed by a federal agency, such as the IRS, the United States Postal Service or the Tennessee Valley Authority.
To apply you must visit your local unemployment office. Although the Tennessee Unemployment Insurance Agency usually recommends unemployed workers file their application online or over the internet, this program requires you to visit a local office to file your claim.
Necessary Documents
Make sure you take with you the information you need to file the unemployment insurance application. This includes your W-2 forms, notification of personnel action: SF-50-b, and the Standard Form 8. Note these are federal employment forms. If you do not have these forms, you may have not been employed by a federal agency after all.
TRA, Trade Readjustment Allowances
Is Globalization a dirty word in your vocabulary. Did another country underprice your job? If your job emigrated to another country, you may qualify for special unemployment benefits. Another similar program that deals with displaced workers who have been affected by market competition trends is sponsored by the North American Free Trade Agreement. This program helps workers who have seen their jobs move to Canada or Mexico.
Application Process
The application process for these programs is different than for Tennessee’s State Unemployment Insurance, or the federal EUC and EB programs. Instead of applying for TRA yourself, it is your employer who generally applies in your behalf. Alternatively, a group of thee or more workers can apply.
Whether you are applying for yourself or you are a representative of your company seeking to help out employees who have been affected by the latest corporate shakedown, you must visit your local unemployment office. They have all the forms and instructions you need to process your application and help others understand the system . Unemployment officers are trained to help you file your application correctly and receive all the assistance you are entitled to.
