    The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, said the department is aware of the difficulty people are having in reaching the claims filing center due to call volume at all five call centers and they  don’t have enough phone lines or people to handle the volume of calls.

     

     

    People can help reduce the number of calls to the claims center by utilizing other resources.Many questions can be answered by accessing the department’s Web site.Some things, such as changing an address, can be done online. People also can go to a local career center for help.

    Unfortunately  renewing benefits, can only be done by calling the claims center.

     

     

    People are required to come to the center in person so workers can verify their information, Chandler said.

    Chandler said unemployment benefits are issued for a year, and at the end of the benefit year people need to renew their benefits. Since many people were laid off in December 2008 and the beginning of 2009, Chandler said they have seen an increase of people who are having problems with renewing their

    The November unemployment rate for Tennessee was 10.3 percent, a slight drop from the month before.

    According to the department’s records, 37,365 new claims were filed in December compared to 91,442 claims in January 2009, the month that saw the highest number of new claims. But December’s numbers were still a 35 percent increase from December 2007.
