Tennessee workers have another chance of receiving the help they need with the fourth extension of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program of 2008. President Obama finally signed the extension of the Bill on December 17, 2010. Now unemployed workers can file for EUC and Extended Benefits unemployment benefits until the end of this year. Unfortunately, the popular $25 extra FAC program was not extended. The last week you could have claimed it was the week from the 5 to the 11 of December, 2010.
So what is the situation for unemployed workers now. What tiers of the EUC can Tennessee workers apply for? What is the length of unemployment benefits in Tennessee? What tips are there to file with the hotline Tennessee unemployment service? These and many other questions will be examined and answered in this series of articles on the state of unemployment benefits in Tennessee for 2011.
What The Extension Did NOT Do
Many 99ers had high hopes the lame duck session of congress would not only extend the EUC program of 2008 but would also expand it to include a 5th tier. Unfortunately for 99ers, long term unemployed workers who have exhausted all their unemployment benefit weeks, there aren’t any new tiers in the EUC of 2011. Once you exhaust tier 4 and the extra 20 (in some states less but at a higher weekly benefit rate) there is no more unemployment compensation.
Incidentally, not all states provide a maximum of 99 weeks of unemployment to workers, so 99ers is often an exaggeration. Five states only offer 60 weeks, nine have 86 weeks and only 24 states plus Washington D.C. have the full 99 weeks.
How Many Weeks of Unemployment Benefits Do We Get In Tennessee?
Tennessee does, for now, offer the full 99 weeks of unemployment. This is divided between the maximum 26 weeks of regular state unemployment benefits, 53 weeks of EUC and 20 weeks of Extended Benefits. Of course, it not exactly good news Tennessee offers the full 99 weeks. It only means Tennessee has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and qualifies for the full four tiers of EUC and the federal/state Extended Benefits program, which are reserved for states with an unemployment rate of over 8.5 percent that have suffered an increase of 20 percent in their unemployment rates in the last two years.
So how can you apply for the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program in Tennessee? Which tiers do you qualify for? How much will you get for your weekly unemployment benefits. Find out in our next article in this series:
